The iconic Sombrero

Looking for the perfect accessory to celebrate Cinco de Mayo? The sombrero is a worldwide symbol of Mexican culture, often associated with fun, sun, and festive parties. But this iconic hat is much more than just festive wear—it has a deep history rooted in practicality and tradition.

Here are five fun facts about the traditional Mexican sombrero:

1. The Name is a Perfect Fit

The word "sombrero" comes from the Spanish word sombra, which literally means "shade". The hat was designed with an extra-wide brim specifically to provide extensive protection from the intense Mexican sun, shading not only the wearer's head but also their face and shoulders.

2. Status Symbol on Your Head

The material and decoration of a sombrero often indicated the wearer's social status. Wealthy individuals or gentlemen wore sombreros made of felt or even velvet, often embellished with intricate gold and silver embroidery. In contrast, workers and peasants wore simpler, cheaper sombreros made of straw to keep cool in the fields.

3. The Original "Cowboy Hat"

Sombreros date back to the 15th century in Spain. After the Spanish brought their wide-brimmed hats to Mexico, local vaqueros (Mexican cowboys) adopted and adapted the design. This Mexican design was later modified by American ranchers and frontiersmen, eventually evolving into the classic cowboy hat as we know it today.

4. Part of a Courtship Dance

The famous Jarabe Tapatío, or the Mexican Hat Dance, is the national dance of Mexico and features the sombrero prominently. As part of the courtship story depicted in the dance, the male dancer throws his most valued possession—his sombrero—onto the floor as a grand gesture, and the woman shows her acceptance by dancing on the brim.

5. Built for the Ride

Traditional sombreros have a chin strap, known as a barboquejo, to keep the large hat from falling off or blowing away, especially when the wearer is on horseback. The high crown also served a practical purpose by providing insulation, allowing air to circulate and keep the wearer cool.
